Elevating everyday living: an interview with Cultiver’s Emily Thompson

We recently sat down with Emily Thompson, General Manager of luxury linen brand CULTIVER, to learn more about the brand’s ethos and how investing in quality linen can transform a home. Emily shared her insights on CULTIVER’s commitment to craftsmanship, her top tips for creating a serene bedroom environment, and the inspiration behind the brand’s collaboration with Coco Republic.

Tell us a little about CULTIVER and your role within the brand

Founded in Sydney in 2012, CULTIVER is a luxury linen brand, now operating from Australia, the US and UK. We offer a curated collection of bedding, living, dining and bathroom pieces, and the brand is built on the foundation of quality, timeless products that add a little luxury to your everyday rituals. As General Manager of the brand, I’m very fortunate to work across every facet of the global business alongside a wonderful team, who bring our value of ‘everyday enjoyment’ to life in the office! From meeting with our suppliers and partners, who share our appreciation for quality and design, to the development of beautiful new products, to overseeing the marketing and operations functions that keep us thriving. My role is both analytical and creative, so I balance my time between data and seeking inspiration!

What inspired the collaboration between CULTIVER and Coco Republic, and how do you see it enhancing the customer experience?

Coco Republic is such a well-respected Australian interiors brand, so we’re delighted to be joining forces. By combining the strengths of our two brands, both vested in quality and expert craftsmanship, we’ll provide a convenient one-stop solution for customers. The designs and fabrications available within the Coco Republic bedroom collection beautifully complement the CULTIVER linen colour range, so together, we have the opportunity to create a broad range of aesthetics, meeting the needs of so many customers.

You source your linen from around the world. What makes CULTIVER’s linen so special?

All our bedding is produced exclusively with European Flax certified linen that’s also OEKO-TEX certified, ensuring we’re using the best natural materials with no harmful chemicals within the manufacturing process. Starting with the right foundations is incredibly important; however, the finishing process and details are what sets our linens apart. We use a specialised pre-wash to ensure our linen is wonderfully soft from the first use. We care about the little details: for example, our duvet covers have beautiful mother-of-pearl buttons and inner corner ties to attach to the duvet to keep it in place. Our fitted sheets are generous in depth, so you don’t have to fight with the mattress when making the bed. It’s the small things that make a big difference.

What are your top three tips for creating a serene bedroom environment that’s conducive to rest and relaxation?

Firstly, choose the right support. After all, you’ve invested in a great bed – don’t underestimate the importance of your mattress and pillows. They’re essential!

Secondly, get the right bedding combination, especially if you share your bed with someone who has different sleep preferences! Add layers so you can upweight or strip back depending on the season.

Tip three has nothing to do with the bed, but the lighting. Having good lighting makes a big difference to how you feel, how you wind down, how well you sleep and wake up. Window coverings and lamps play an important role and should be considered based on your room and outside environment.

“We offer a curated collection of bedding, living, dining and bathroom pieces, and the brand is built on the foundation of quality, timeless products that add a little luxury to your everyday rituals.”

How do colour and texture influence the ambience of a bedroom, and what trends are you currently seeing in bedding design?

At CULTIVER, we believe that there is beauty in simplicity and that’s reflected in the trends that have been emerging in the last few years. The heavyweight bedcover has become a hero of our collection – it’s easy to style and simplistic in design, but also versatile as it can be styled with a European tuck or layered and pulled back.
Combining colours and textures is a great way to add interest to a room or bed, and we’re seeing more bravery with this. Mixing different fabrics and colours is a playful approach to simple textiles without the need for patterns. Colour mixing can be bold or within a neutral palette and combining materials like velvets with linens can add a luxurious depth to the bed.

What is the relationship between quality bed linen and overall wellbeing? How can investing in your bedroom improve one’s lifestyle?

The benefit of sleep on wellbeing has been widely publicised in recent years, and we agree: a good night’s sleep will set you up for the day ahead. Linen is a natural material, so it helps to regulate temperature for optimal sleep. But for us, investing in your bedroom goes way beyond that, creating a sanctuary that has all the little touches that make you feel truly at home. Colour plays a role in sleep wellbeing too, but we think that your bedroom should be the place in your home where you feel the most joy. Choose colours, fabrics and furniture that make you happy – the more you love the space, the more likely you are to get an early night!

CULTIVER’s ethos is all about finding enjoyment in the everyday. What daily rituals elevate your day-to-day life?

Although I mentioned lighting in the bedroom being important, it’s an interesting point for me as I sleep with the blinds open. I like to wake up naturally to the light! Then the day starts with making my bed (CULTIVER linens, of course) – it’s always the first thing I do. I am quite a minimalist and love to keep the house in check as an organised home is the foundation to making every day easy! I’m also a big fan of daily movement whether it’s lifting weights, Pilates or a walk at the beach. For me, working out keeps my mind healthy too, so I always try to squeeze something in every day. Finally, but the most important, is being surrounded by good people. A little bit of laughter every day goes a long way.
